Gold for Mortimer at British Schools Championships – 10th March 2012

Gold for Adam Mortimer

Five players from Hull Judo Club competed at the recent 2012 British Schools Judo Championships held at iceSheffield. The British Schools Championships is an opportunity for the players to not only represent the Judo Club but also to represent local schools, with four schools being represented in our team.

After a long day at iceSheffield Adam Mortimer representing Wilberforce Sixth Form College was crowned British Schools Champion in the under 73kg category. Adam demonstrated high quality judo in all four fights and was rarely put under pressure. Club Coach Peter Barley said ‘this was some of the best judo I have seen from Adam and his cool head meant that he kept himself out of the danger zone’.

Adam’s college friend Tom Booth also demonstrated some great judo, showing a vast improvement to his competitive Judo. Tom came close to returning home with the Bronze but sadly after ending the first 4 minutes of competitive time in his bronze medal fight drawing with his opponent, a long day finally took its toll and Tom was defeated. His performance though was a great stepping stone as training starts to build towards the national championships in October.

Kyle Anderson our youngest player, representing Buckingham Primary School also narrowly missed out on the bronze medal. Kyle dominated his first three fights of the day with some exemplary judo. The long day and the atmosphere of Kyle’s first national level competition – a vast step up from local competitions – finally got the better of Kyle in his Bronze medal fight and sadly it wasn’t to be his day. However, Kyle was a credit to the club and to his school and shows signs of great things to come.

Oliver Postill from Longcroft School showed a return to previously seen competitive form. At the bottom end of his age group he demonstrated some good judo as he won some of his fights and identifying things to be worked on as he looks to future competitions.

Sadly our final player Natasha Wright of Newland School for Girls had to be withdrawn from the competition after suffering a shoulder injury. The judo that she showed before this injury was a credit to her recent determination at training.

All the club’s players were a credit to themselves and to their schools and this year it was Adam’s chance to return victorious. All the players are now focusing on the next competition and hopefully they will all return with a medal in hand.

Neal keeps cool during Judo on Ice – 9th October 2010

Hull Judo Club’s Matthew Neal returned home with a Silver medal after becoming British Number Two in the Under 42kg’s Cadet category at the British Championships at IceSheffield.

Neal fought well throughout the day winning his first three fights against some tough opposition to find himself in the Final of his category. After a long wait (as all the finals are held together at the end of the day) Neal started the fight with great gusto, however, after an unlucky moment, Neal was caught with a classic technique which resulted in him returning to Hull with a Silver Medal round his neck.

Club mate Adam Mortimer in the Under 73kg’s showed some convincing Judo against more experienced competitors. After a difficult start, Mortimer fought back well, but sadly was unable to overcome the experience of other players as he made his way through the Repechage.

Team mates Thomas Booth (Under 60kgs) and Tamsin Hartley (Under 48kg’s) both showed some good judo as they came up against some Britains best Judoka. Both players where able to leave the competition arena with their heads held high, but sadly this wasn’t their year as neither player made it through to the medal positions.

Coach Peter Barley commenting on the clubs performance at the 2010 British Championships said “All our players were a credit to the club  both on and off the competition arena. This was the culmination of many weeks and years of hard work, and this time it was Matthews time to shine, but all the players have talent and will reap the rewards of the effort that they put in.”

Goole Youth Championships – 13th June 2010

Hull Judo Club was representated at the recent Goole Youth Championships by Jack Claxton, Adam Mortimer and Thomas Booth.

Claxton continued to show dominance as he went on to win the Gold medal, whilst Booth had a disappointing run of fights to return home with the Bronze.

Mortimer on his way to bringing home the bronze fought well but came up against some tough competition as he moved up weight categories. Mortimers new category has a different approach to Judo which Adam must now get to grips with so that his judo can flourish.
